In 1815, Francis Greenway put forward the idea of building a bridge that connected Dawes Point with the northern shore of Port Jackson. However, this ambition was not realised for many years. In 1900 it became clear that there was a definite need for a bridge here. Design submissions were asked for, however none were thought to be good enough. With the end of World War I, the year 1923 saw requests for an arch or cantilever bridge and Dr J.J.C. Bradfield was put in charge of overseeing the whole design and building of the bridge.

Dorman Long and Co. Ltd, from Middlesborough in England put forward a tender that was accepted. The bridge design was carried out by Sir Ralph Freeman, looking similar to the New York’s Hell Gate Bridge that was built in 1916. This design is recognised all over the world. Whether someone catches a glimpse of it on television while they are playing partypoker, or they see it first-hand, it is a landmark that is very well-known.

The construction of the ‘bridge approaches’ and ‘approach spans’ began in 1924, signalling the start of the whole project. Among the tasks for workers was the construction of foundations on each side of the harbour that could support four steel thrust bearings. This bridge has a width of nearly 50 metres as well as an impressive load bearing capacity.

The bridge was not only designed for functionality, however. The four pylons were placed around 90 metres above the average water level, on each corner of the bridge mainly for aesthetic reasons. The concrete of these pylons was also covered with grey granite, obtained from Moruya on the south coast of New South Wales.

This magnificent feat of engineering was opened in 1932 and nowadays, it consists of eight traffic lanes and two railway lines. There is also a pathway for pedestrians on the eastern side and a cycleway on the western side, allowing for pretty much anyone to enjoy this bridge.
